In 1948, W. Ellery Kellum started a one room oyster shucking house on the shores of Carters Creek and not far from the Chesapeake Bay.
For over 60 years the company has been in continuous operation and continuous family ownership. Today W. E. Kellum, Inc. is owned and operated by Ellery’s children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Today they are called “Corporate Values” but for the Kellum Family it is, literally, a family’s values. As detailed in this article, hard work, fastidious cleanliness and fair dealings has helped it succeed where others have fallen short.
Today, the W.E. Kellum facility consists of a 10,000 square feet, complete with cold storage, world class labeling systems and on site USDC inspections. Kellum Brand Oysters are offered as both live in shell products as well as fresh and frozen shucked oysters. Additionally, Kellum Seafood deals in scallops, oysters, soft crabs, and Chesapeake Bay fin fish.
100% of Kellum Oysters are packed on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay with the vast majority of fresh product coming from within an hour’s drive of their original location.
Ellery Kellum got ahead with hard work, a commitment to quality and customer satisfaction. After all, it was his name – his pride - that was on every package of oysters that went out the door.
And today, the Kellum name is still on every package and the Kellum family still shares that pride.
